18th Arrondissement

The Eighteenth arrondissement is located on the Rive Droite (Right Bank) of Paris. It is the seat of the famed Montmartre neighborhood, not to mention the revered Sacré-Cœur basilica. This neighborhood, with its winding small streets, is picturesque for a Paris apartment. The Eighteenth also has the racier Pigalle neighborhood. It is in this neighborhood that the infamous Moulin Rouge is found. Paris apartments in Pigalle have a risqué excitement about them.

A Paris apartment in the Montmartre neighborhood is surrounded by history and beauty. Its popularity pre-dates its incorporation into Paris proper. Indeed, it was only in the late 1800s that Montmartre was annexed to Paris, by which time it had already cemented its reputation for art, beauty, and wine. It wasn’t until the late 1800s, however, that Montmartre became the center of art in Paris. It was in those years, and those that followed, that Montmartre became a focal point of artists such as Vincent van Gogh, Henri Matisse, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Langston Hughes, Pablo Picasso, and Amadeo Modigliani. Their passing hasn’t ended Montmartre’s tradition of art either. That tradition is still alive and well, and can be seen in the art markets and street artists that canvas Montmartre. Reaching back to that pervious era is still possible as well with the Espace Dali museum that showcases the artist. The graves of quite a few of Montmartre’s artists can also be found in the cemeteries of Montmartre and Saint Paul. A walk through Montmartre makes it apparent why these artists chose the area as well. The streets are beautiful and wind up around the butte (hill) Montmartre. At the top of the hill sits the gleaming white Sacré-Cœur basilica with its dominating spires and domes. At the base of the church and the top of the hill it is easy to see one of the most beautiful views of Paris, especially at dawn or dusk. Around the church are grassy slopes, cafés, and bars where that sight can be enjoyed. Not far from the church is a truly unique sight in Paris as well, a vineyard. That vineyard is the last vestige of Parisian wine cultivation. All of these sights make it apparent why Montmartre is so valued as a sight for Paris apartments.

Down the hill form Montmartre is the racy and sometimes raunchy Pigalle neighborhood, which gives Paris apartments in the area an aura of excitement. It is here that the Moulin Rouge and Paris’ red light district reside. The streets in this neighborhood are always in a state of excitement. The excitement picks up at dusk when people gather to celebrate. It is of course then that the cabarets, bars, and clubs fill up. Pigalle isn’t just a big party, however. It is as dedicated to music as it is to human vice. There exist even streets in the area that are nearly void of anything other than instrument shops. There are, of course, the record shops as well. Pigalle truly has everything needed to create a lively atmosphere for a Paris apartment.
